A Beautiful Vineyard Wedding at Holland Marsh Wineries

There’s something about a vineyard wedding that just feels romantic, and Holland Marsh Wineries provided a beautiful backdrop for Rachel’s wedding day.

Located just outside Newmarket, Ontario, Holland Marsh Wineries combines the relaxed atmosphere of the countryside with rows of grapevines, rustic buildings and plenty of beautiful outdoor locations for wedding photography.

From the beginning of the day right through to sunset, there were so many great moments to photograph.

Getting Ready and the Details

I always love starting a wedding day with some of the smaller details.

Rachel’s wedding dress looked incredible hanging outdoors among the trees, and her personalized bridal hanger was one of those simple touches that made the photograph feel uniquely hers.

The lace and detailing in the dress photographed beautifully, especially against the darker greens of the surrounding property.

It’s these little details that help tell the complete story of a wedding day before everything gets underway.

The First Look

One of my favourite moments was Rachel and her groom's first look.

First looks are always interesting because you never quite know what the reaction is going to be. There’s that little bit of anticipation while one person waits and the other walks up behind them.

Rachel approaching with a huge smile made this one especially fun to photograph.

It’s also a great opportunity for couples to have a few minutes together before the pace of the wedding day really picks up.

Wedding Photos in the Vineyard

Of course, if you're getting married at a winery, you have to take advantage of the vineyard.

The rows of vines at Holland Marsh Wineries created a gorgeous natural background for both the couple's portraits and the wedding party photos.

For Rachel and her bridesmaids, we brought everyone together between the vines for a relaxed portrait with their bouquets out front. The soft blues, whites and greens worked beautifully with the vineyard surrounding them.

For the couple's portraits, I wanted to keep things natural and let the location do much of the work. Sometimes the best wedding photographs don't need an elaborate setup — beautiful light, a great location and a couple enjoying themselves are more than enough.

Golden Hour

Then the light changed.

As the sun started dropping toward the horizon, the vineyard was filled with warm golden light. This is exactly why I always keep an eye on sunset during a wedding.

Even if we've already finished the formal portraits, I'll often ask a couple if they're willing to sneak outside with me for another five or ten minutes when the light is right.

Rachel and her husband were up for it, and it was absolutely worth it.

We photographed them with the sun directly behind them, allowing the warm light and flare to become part of the images. The result was a completely different look from the portraits we had created earlier in the day — warmer, more dramatic and incredibly romantic.

Those few minutes at sunset ended up producing some of my favourite photographs from the entire wedding.

Getting Married at Holland Marsh Wineries

For couples looking for a vineyard wedding venue north of Toronto, Holland Marsh Wineries is a beautiful option.

From a photographer's perspective, one of the things I particularly like about the venue is the variety. You can move from trees and rustic architecture to open vineyard rows, and then completely change the look again when golden hour arrives.

That variety means your wedding gallery doesn't feel like every photograph was taken in exactly the same spot.

More importantly, Rachel and her husband looked genuinely happy and relaxed throughout the day, and that's ultimately what I want the photographs to capture.

Congratulations again to the newlyweds. It was a pleasure being there to document it.
